The ones here are pretty old, so I might edit them later!!

Every living creature has a soul. One that is physical, can be removed after death (or through other means…), and is unique to the person. Depending on the life the person lived, they have different uses.

Usually brewed into potions and drinks, they can heal, poison, cure illness, bestow curses… it’s really endless. They can also do more tame things like energize you or make you drowsy. They are different from what would usually be used in potions (herbs and berries and such) because they make the effect much more potent. Unless you’re very skilled, to make a strong potion, you need a soul.

Most communities will take the souls of the deceased and use them for potions (with permission of the family—though it’s practically always given, as it's culture), but some are instead sold. The souls of humans, halflings, and dwarves are the cheapest, usually good for tame potions. Elves can be a bit more magical and therefore more expensive, then tieflings, dragonborn, and all the rarer species.

The most expensive souls, however, are Elwen and Newle’s descendants’ (such as Amdis). Their souls are usually put on the market immediately, since they guarantee a large profit alongside their rarity. They contain extremely strong magic sought by powerful wizards and warriors.

Also, the souls of animals and plants are much more weak, exceptions being stronger, larger, and or magical animals / plants. The souls of average plants are used either in teas to improve health, or recycled into the ground. Animal souls are brewed for nutrition or, depending on the animal, some tame improvements to strength, agility, stuff like that.

Souls can also be eaten directly, but if you don’t have a good constitution, I wouldn’t recommend it… They can also be absorbed (if you’re strong enough for it), though that practice is highly taboo.

Amdis’ soul is different from both everyone else’s and the typical soul of an Elwen descendant. Becoming a vampyre— a creature of Newle— made his soul a weird mix of the two (Elwen and Newle). He was never aware of it.
